End-of-Summer HVAC Checklist Before Chicago's First Cold Snap

Chicago Luxury Appliance & HVAC recommends running a preventive furnace and heat pump check in late August or early September, before Chicago's first cold snap, to catch igniter wear, condensate drain clogs, and thermostat battery issues before they turn into no-heat emergencies. This checklist typically takes 30–60 minutes to complete yourself or $150–$300 if scheduled as a professional pre-season tune-up, and the work prevents the majority of emergency service calls we respond to in October and November.
1. Test the Furnace or Heat Pump on Heat Mode
Set the thermostat to heat mode and raise the temperature 5–10 degrees above the current room temperature. The furnace or heat pump should ignite or engage within a few minutes and deliver warm air to every register in the home. If the system hesitates, short-cycles, or blows lukewarm air, that's a sign the igniter, flame sensor, or heat pump defrost board may need attention before the first freeze.
For Carrier Infinity, Trane, and Lennox variable-speed systems, a control board miscommunication can shut down the heating cycle even when the mechanical components are fine — testing early allows time for a diagnostic before the first cold night. On Mitsubishi Electric and Daikin heat pumps, a refrigerant charge that's even slightly off will show up as reduced heating output rather than a hard failure, so testing while it's still mild outside helps catch the issue before winter demand.
2. Inspect and Clear the Condensate Drain Line
High-efficiency furnaces condense exhaust gas in a secondary heat exchanger, and the resulting condensate drains through a PVC or vinyl line to a floor drain, sump, or exterior outlet. Over the summer cooling season, algae and sediment can build up in this drain line, and if it clogs when the furnace switches to heating mode, the safety switch will shut down the system to prevent water backup.
Locate the condensate drain line near the furnace — it's usually a clear or white tube exiting the bottom of the unit — and flush it with a mix of warm water and vinegar or a dedicated condensate treatment tablet. If the line is already clogged, a wet-dry vacuum applied to the outlet end usually clears it without needing to disassemble the trap. Condensate drain clogs are the single most common no-heat call we get on Lennox and Carrier high-efficiency furnaces in October, and clearing the line in September prevents the emergency altogether.
3. Replace the Furnace Filter and Check Airflow
A clogged furnace filter restricts airflow to the heat exchanger, which can cause the furnace to overheat and shut down on the high-limit safety switch. Replace the filter with a new one rated for your system's static pressure — most residential systems run best on MERV 8–11 filters, while higher MERV-rated filters require a professional static pressure check to confirm the blower can handle the additional resistance.
After replacing the filter, turn the system on and walk through the home to confirm warm air is coming out of every register. Rooms that blow weak or no air may have a duct leak, a closed damper, or an undersized return — all of which can be corrected before the heating season starts. For homes in Lincoln Park, Old Town, and Gold Coast with older greystone or courtyard-building duct systems retrofitted across multiple remodels, airflow problems are common and worth addressing before expecting full-season performance.
4. Inspect the Outdoor Heat Pump or AC Condenser Unit
For homes with a heat pump or central air conditioning system, the outdoor condenser unit should be clear of leaves, grass clippings, and debris before the heating season. A clogged condenser coil restricts airflow and forces the compressor to work harder, which can lead to premature failure or reduced heating capacity when the heat pump switches to winter mode.
Rinse the condenser coil with a garden hose from the inside out (not under high pressure, which can bend the fins) and clear any vegetation within two feet of the unit. For Mitsubishi Electric hyper-heat systems rated for sub-zero Chicago winters, the outdoor unit will run year-round, so keeping the coil clean now prevents airflow restrictions that show up as reduced heating output in January and February.
5. Test the Thermostat and Replace Batteries
Replace the batteries in battery-powered thermostats, even if the low-battery indicator hasn't appeared yet — most thermostats will continue to display and accept input for weeks after the batteries are too weak to reliably signal the furnace or heat pump. A weak battery can cause the system to short-cycle or fail to call for heat, which reads like a furnace problem but is actually a thermostat issue.
For smart thermostats like Nest, Ecobee, or Honeywell Home, confirm the system is correctly configured for the heating equipment type — a heat pump thermostat setting on a conventional furnace, or vice versa, will cause erratic heating behavior. If the thermostat was installed by a previous owner or contractor and you're not sure of the configuration, now is the time to confirm it before the first cold night.
