Wolf Range Igniter Problems: What's Fixable vs What Isn't

Wolf's dual-stacked burners and professional-grade ignition systems run hotter and cycle more frequently than most residential ranges, which means igniter wear happens faster in high-use households. The good news: most igniter and spark module issues are fixable without replacing the entire range, as long as you diagnose the root cause correctly.
1. Igniter Wear vs. Spark Module Failure
A burner that clicks but won't light is usually a worn igniter — the ceramic electrode that creates the spark. Wolf igniters are designed to last years, but constant moisture exposure (from boiling pots, cleaning spray, or humid summer kitchens) can crack the ceramic or corrode the connection point. A cracked igniter will click inconsistently or not at all, and it's a straightforward OEM part replacement that takes under an hour.
If multiple burners won't ignite, or if all burners click constantly even after they're lit, the spark module itself is likely failing. The spark module is the central control unit that distributes spark voltage to each burner, and when it starts to fail, it sends erratic signals. This is also a repairable issue — the module is a single replaceable component mounted behind the front control panel.
2. Gas Pressure Inconsistencies in Older Chicago Homes
In Chicago's older housing stock — particularly greystones, courtyard buildings, and converted multi-units in neighborhoods like Old Town Triangle, Lincoln Park, and Wrightwood Neighbors — gas line pressure can fluctuate across shared building systems or legacy household piping. Wolf ranges are tuned for a tighter pressure tolerance than standard residential ranges, so an igniter that works intermittently may be responding to inconsistent gas delivery rather than a defective part.
Before replacing an igniter or spark module, a trained technician should test gas pressure at the range inlet with a manometer. If pressure reads below 5 inches of water column (the minimum for proper Wolf burner operation), the issue is upstream — either in the building's main gas line or in the household supply line — and no amount of igniter replacement will fix it.
3. Airflow and Makeup Air Requirements
Wolf's commercial-style burners produce more BTUs than standard residential ranges, which means they consume more oxygen during operation. In tightly sealed homes — or kitchens with undersized makeup air systems — the burners can starve for oxygen, causing pilot and igniter issues that look like equipment failure but are actually an installation or ventilation problem.
This is especially common in recently renovated kitchens in Hinsdale, Oak Brook, and Barrington estate homes, where the range was upgraded to Wolf but the makeup air system wasn't resized to match. If burners ignite normally when a nearby window or door is open but fail when the kitchen is sealed, that's a clear sign the issue is airflow, not the igniter.
4. What's Repairable vs. What Requires Replacement
Repairable: Individual igniter replacement ($250–$400 including the OEM part and labor), spark module replacement ($400–$600), gas valve replacement if a single burner valve is defective ($300–$500), and control board replacement if burner operation is erratic but igniters test fine ($500–$800).
Not repairable (or not cost-effective): Corroded burner boxes where moisture has eaten through the steel housing (replacement parts cost as much as a used range), widespread control board corrosion from a major spill or flood, or a range with multiple simultaneous igniter, valve, and wiring failures (which usually signals the unit is nearing end-of-life and will keep failing in new areas).
5. When to Call for Service vs. When to Wait
If a burner won't ignite at all or if you smell gas while trying to light it, stop using that burner immediately and schedule a service call. Igniter issues can leave gas flowing without ignition, which is a safety risk.
If a burner takes several clicks to ignite but eventually lights normally, that's early-stage igniter wear — you can continue using the range, but it's worth scheduling a diagnostic visit before the igniter fails completely. Most igniter replacements are completed in a single visit once the correct OEM part is identified.
